Who was Arkangelo Ali?
AAA activities and even the organisation's name are inspired by the example of Fr. Arkangelo Ali, a Sudanese Priest from the Ndogo tribe, who worked for the Diocese of Rumbek. His life was the one of an outstanding leader and a selfless servant to the Sudanese people.
He carried out his pastoral service to the Sudanese even in the most difficult times of the post-colonial Sudan, when the central government was involved in a bloody repression of the South Sudanese leadership due to a deliberate strategy of islamization and arabisation for the whole South.
Fr. Arkangelo was accused of having links to the Anyanya (armed Southern resistance) and he was imprisoned twice and submitted to degrading treatment. He was cold-bloodedly shot by a government soldier near the veranda of Rumbek Mission on 20th July 1965.
H.E Gabriel Cardinal Zubei Wako, Archbishop of Khartoum, Sudan Catholic Bishops together with other Church dignitaries, the local community and government officials held a memorial service in Rumbek on Tuesday November 9, 2010, in honour of Fr. Arkangelo Ali and those who died with him. |
